Lindley H. Clark Jr

Perhaps best known for his monetarist's views and grassroots coverage of economics, The Wall Street Journal's Mr. Clark wrote the paper's "Speaking of Business" column that appeared on its editorial page for many years.

Mr. Clark is considered one of the deans of economic writing and served as a role model for the next generation of writers. He also contributed for many years to "The Outlook," a Monday column that chronicles developments in the U.S. and world economies. His observations were watched closely by business and government alike.

Highly respected by both his colleagues and peers, Mr. Clark joined the Journal in 1949 as a copy editor. His long career at the Journal, which ended with his retirement in 1995, included a five-year stint as Page One editor during the late 1950s. In 1972, he was named economic news editor.

He received a master's degree in economics in 1948 from the University of Chicago.

His book, "The Secret Tax: What You Need to Know About Inflation (If We Are Ever Going to Beat It)" was published in 1976 by Dow Jones Books and Dow Jones-Irwin.
