As editor and managing editor of Fortune from 1941-1953, Mr. Paine gathered perhaps one of the most talented groups of writers to ever assemble on a magazine. Under his tutelage during the early 1940s were Archibald MacLeish, Dwight Macdonald, Eric Hodgins and J.K. Galbraith. After serving as editor, Mr. Paine became publisher of the magazine until 1967, and he also served as publisher of Architectural Forum from 1954-1963 and House and Home in 1962 and 1963. He died of heart failure in 1991 at the age of 84.
